Website Design
The Magazine
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Since 1992, The Magazine has been a voice of creative work in New Mexico. In keeping with its mission to continue to lead and elevate Southwest contemporary arts and culture, The embarked on a website redesign to bring this time-honored Santa Fe publication firmly into the digital realm and to the eyes of a wider national audience. Launched at the 25th anniversary gala, we created and built a robust, fully responsive custom WordPress website design with a plethora of content and features, all easy for staff to update in-house. The design serves as a framework to simply and elegantly share the breadth of art reviewed each month, and to grow with the content for years to come (and the many years of archives already in place!). Our palette is crisp black and white with bold chartreuse accents, and a typographic mix of chunky classic serifed headers and delicate text. We worked with the structure of a grid in each layout, using a hierarchy of square shapes on the homepage; in each article’s imagery, block quotes, and “keep reading” suggestions; to present three levels of information in the navigation; and continuing with a masonry-style collage on the events page.
Our work with this influential monthly also encompassed bringing additional revenue streams to life: paid membership options and an events submission portal; an online WooCommerce shop for subscriptions, back issues, and limited edition prints; and tasteful advertising opportunities throughout. Our custom designed features for this beautiful creative hub include: mega-menu navigation to showcase types of articles as well as selected images under each topic; a full-width slideshow for issue cover, linked onward to the full month’s work; an eye-catching grid which automatically posts the most recent writing in each category, with colorful featured images and rollover text excerpts; Instagram integration and a feed of upcoming Editor’s Picks on the homepage; a call-to-action newsletter signup in striking lime green; an interactive art guide with location maps and filters; and a resource bank of the best job listings in the arts state-wide.
